You cannot step twice into the same river, can you? Austria and its "Guest Workers" in the Periods of 1961-1974 and 2002-2011
Kavan, Ondřej ; Dimitrov, Michal (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
In the beginning of 1960s, as a result of the "economic miracle," Austria had to face an increasing labour shortage that threatened the so appreciated economic growth. The problem was solved by means of a regulated labour migration programme based on the so- called rotation principle. The programme aimed to ensure foreign workers' role as a flexible labour force for times of economic boom while securing their return back to their homelands in times of economic downturn. After the programme was abruptly ended in 1974, a majority of "guest workers" instead of returning home settled down in Austria. This however undermined the core idea of the programme and it became dysfunctional. The "Gastarbeiter programme", which represented a policy of immigration without integration, thus became a highly controversial topic. In spite of that fact, a similar policy for seasonal workers was implemented in Austria between 2002 and 2011. The main goal of the thesis is to analyse both the periods, ascertain whether these represent comparable phenomena and explore the transfer of historical experience. Due to the diachronic relation of the two periods, significant attention is paid to the contexts within which both the policies have been implemented. For that reason, the thesis offers an in-depth discussion of...

Kodýdková Daniela, Ausländische Arbeitskräfte und ihre Bedeutung für die BRD Abstract This bachelor work with the title "Ausländische Arbeitskräfte und ihre Bedeutung für die BRD" (in English: Foreign Workers and their meaning for the Federal Republic of Germany) is dedicated in its theoretical part to the topic of the recruitment of foreign workers to the Federal Republic of Germany from economically weaker European countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Yugoslavia, and later also from countries that neither geographically nor politically belong to Europe (Turkey, Morocco and Tunisia), in the period of time from the middle of the fifties until the recruitment ban in 1973, and also to its causes and consequences. The analytical section examines the meaning or benefit of the recruitment and presence of the foreign workers. However, there were not only positive aspects connected as was awaited at the beginning of the recruitment especially in the economic sphere. Not all the foreign workers wanted to return back to their home countries after earning expected living and these who stayed in Germany became, after the recruitment ban, real immigrants with the vision of a long-term stay. In the chapter entitled Schlussfolgerung there is the comparison of the positive and negative impacts of the foreign...

Analysis of immigration policy in Switzerland
Kubák, Adam ; Ševčíková, Michaela (advisor) ; Šimíček, Petr (referee)
Bachelor thesis dealing with immigration policies in Switzerland. The aim is to analyse the evolution of migration in Switzerland so that we can better understand current events, especially the important referendum from February 9, 2014. This referendum approved the renewal of restrictions against foreigners in Switzerland. This paper answers the question of how the structure of foreigners evolved and how the increase in migration affected unemployment of the domestic population. It was found that the results of this referendum are quite significant for the relationship between Switzerland and the EU; it could result in the termination of some bilateral agreements. Also, it was found that the immigrants do not increase the unemployment rate of Swiss citizens. During an economic crisis, the unemployment rate of immigrants will rise first. As for the composition of the foreign population, 1990 was an important year because the three circle model was introduced. This model supported the influx of the skilled workforce. Thesis contributes to provide a comprehensive picture of migration in Switzerland combined with an analysis of the potential impacts of the referendum on restrictions of foreigners into the country.
